Innards: The Sweet Ride

Innards: The Sweet Ride

"caramelized onions, half a ripe pear & brie cheese...rides like a dream" $12.67
and a side of sweet potato strings
with Domestic Elk patty - $3.29 upgrade
extra Roasted Red Peppers - $1.53
extra Jumbo Shrimp - $3.71

In contrast to original expectations, the addition of pear and peppers really lifted any potential heaviness of the oozing brie cheese (which was minimal). The mildly sweet flavours did justice to the lean game meat, which was cooked to medium well (a little too crumbly to hold up against the silky moist toppings). I wish I knew we could have requested the patties be cooked to medium rare. The jumbo shrimp? It was nicely grilled and added on just because we could. It was also consumed well before my first bite into the burger.
I'm also a sucker for sweet potato fries. These ones were coated with a thin shattering crust, crisp and addictive like chips.

My hospital visit is always well prepared, today I bought a Su Doku bokset for my mum to do when she's bored and a photography magazine for me to read (didn't learn much, just a bit of sharpening techniques and how selective sharpening is cool). Most of the time I was playing patapon 2 on the psp which is mucho fun and addictive.

Not much progress today since it's a sunday and most doctors are sleepy or relaxing. My mum started eating again and was able to eat the food I cooked her yesterday, kinda wish I knew that so I could cook some more for today. The hospital food was mucho blandular so very little of that was consumed.

Now I just need to take these ingredients and make it. Rumor has it we are supposed to get a lot of snow tomorrow so if I am snowed in I will make it then.

1 butternut squash
2 leeks
2 pears (you can use canned if you cant find fresh)
2 large tomatoes
garlic
olive oil
chicken stock.

Roast squash (cubed), leeks (quartered) pears (quartered), tomatoes (quartered)
and 4 cloves of garlic. Drizzle with olive oil, salt and pepper. Roast at 425 for

After such a heavy, fattening breakfast, it took me AGES to get hungry enough to eat dinner. Once I did get hungry, I decided it would be best to have something really light, and really healthy. I am a big fan of stir fry. My ex-roommate and friend bought this pan for me and I use it almost every single time I cook.

1 TB Olive Oil
1/4 C Ponzu
1 clove garlic
1/2 tsp Cinese Five Spice
1 Fresno pepper
1 bunch Bok Choy
1 C peas
1 pk sliced mushrooms
1/2 c chopped red onions
1 TB Red pepper flakes
3/4 C Broccoli Slaw
1 TB toasted pumpkin seeds
Salt to taste

Served over a bed of jasmine rice.

light and delish! Would have been better with a little soy sauce and some sugar snap peas. Next time... ;-)

Cup and Saucer

This is a small espresso cup and saucer that used to belong to my mother, although I never recall my parents drinking espresso. It is pretty old and hopefully works for today's challenge - she would be pleased!

Oh, I know I am still a newbie compared to many within this great group and across Flickr but I was pleased to note that I am now >100K views, pleased with that!

The plaque says that:
Lacking a foot, cups of this type had to be emptied before they could be set down. Like the satyr and maenad painted on the rim, the donkey was associated with Dionysos, god of wine. From about 480 B.C.

COOKING CORN ON THE COB BOILING. COOKING CORN ON

Cooking Corn On The Cob Boiling. Cooking Instructions For Chicken.

Cooking Corn On The Cob Boiling

cooking corn on the cob boiling - The Story

The Story of Corn

The Story of Corn

The Story of Corn is a unique compendium, drawing upon history and mythology, science and art, anecdote and image, personal narrative and epic to tell the extraordinary story of the grain that built the New World. Corn transformed the way the entire world eats, providing a hardy, inexpensive alternative to rice or wheat and cheap fodder for livestock and finding its way into everything from explosives to embalming fluid.
Betty Fussell has given us a true American saga, interweaving the histories of the indigenous peoples who first cultivated the grain and the European conquerors who appropriated and propagated it around the globe. She explores corn's roles as food, fetish, crop, and commodity to those who have planted, consumed, worshiped, processed, and profited from it for seven centuries.
Now available only from the University of New Mexico Press, The Story of Corn, is the winner of a Julia Child Cookbook Award from the International Association of Culinary Professionals.

"Written in a lively and nontechnical style."--Library Journal

"Fussell has clearly done a good deal of research and a lot of traveling--peering over a precipice at Machu Picchu, descending into a restored ceremonial kiva of the Anasazi people in New Mexico, visiting the sole surviving corn palace from the Midwest boosters--glory days of a century ago."--Kirkus Reviews

Corn on the Cob

Corn on the Cob

Whakarewarewa near Rotorua is an inhabited Maori village and cultural center built around an impressive geothermal site. The residents use the geothermal pools and vents for bathing and cooking. Here they are cooking corn on the cob in this near-boiling, crystal-clear hot spring. We had some -- it was very good. I expected it to taste of the ubiquitous hydrogen sulfide, but it didn't pick up any off-flavor at all. They also use steam vents for steaming food: they have wooden covers constructed over the open vents, and they wrap meat/vegetables/etc in aluminum foil. The steam slow-cooks the food and keeps it nice and moist. Come back later & you've got dinner.

The Life and Times of Corn

What grain has seeds in all colors of the rainbow, can grow twenty feet high, is often harvested by moonlight, and is more valuable to the United States than gold?

As the New York times Book Review said, “Micucci knows how to grab his audience” and is “canny about organizing his material.” Building upon his successful series of creative science for the younger grades, the author-illustrator of the LIFE AND TIMES series focuses on the science, uses and history of American’s most prevalent crop. A master of fascinating trivia, he knows just how to draw readers in and expand on a seemingly small topic.
